The effects of mechanical factors imposed on soils and physical character of soils on the swelling behaviors of bentonites have been studied by many researchers. However few investigations have been done into the effects of chemical character of pore electrolyte solutions of soils. In this paper, the experimental study on the influences of electrolyte solution concentration on the swelling pressure is conducted. The results indicate that the swelling pressure decrease with the increased concentration of pore solution. If the concentrations of solutions used to inundate the soil sample are lower than that ones used to prepare the soil sample, the swelling pressures are not necessarily larger than the ones obtained in the cases that the concentrations of solutions used to prepare and to inundate the sample is same.
