ABSTRACT

The study of shear strength of Bafoussam soils has permitted to obtain the values of the angle of internal friction and the cohesion. The analysis of relationships between the latter and physical characteristics has shown significant correlations between the angle of internal friction and the plastic limit, the apparent density and the consistency index. Significant correlations between the cohesion, the liquid limit and the fine particles content have also been established. Mathematical models giving the angle of internal friction and the cohesion through the most determinant physical parameters mentioned above have also been elaborated. The models obtained may be used for the determination of the angle of internal friction and cohesion of Bafoussam soils using the physical parameters whose measure is simpler and cheaper. These shear strength components are essential in the foundations design using “c - f” method as well as for the study of retaining walls and slopes stability.
