Complex Multi-Segment Sliding Surface Search Method on Stability Analysis of Two-Dimensional Irregular Slope

This paper presents a new method based on a complex trial failure surface composed of a series of segments with different inclinations. These inclinations are taken as a random variable and the critical sliding surface is searched. After improving and broadening this new method, this paper adopts different curve sliding surfaces (also called multi-segment curve sliding surface) in different soils to analyze the stability in layered slopes; and by combining slope contour; it proposed the searching method of poly-line sliding surface. After calculating and analyzing previous researches and achievements by other circular sliding surface methods, the results of this paper are as follows: Firstly, multi-segment curve sliding surface applied on stability analysis of layered slope is practicable. Secondly, in the stability analysis of homogeneous slope with complex geometries, poly-line sliding surface has as much validity as curve sliding surface does. Compared with other circular sliding surface methods, the calculation results by curve sliding surface tend to be somewhat minimum, thus, it can be applied into the slopes whose layers boundaries and slope surface are poly-lined. Thirdly, in layered slopes, the calculation result of safety factor with the Janbu method shows: the safety factor of multiple curves sliding surface is minimum, single curve sliding surface is moderate, and the circular sliding surface is maximum. At the same time, judging from the results of critical sliding surface, when the physical properties of soil layers differ a lot, sliding surface turns to be non-arc, and the sliding surface between soils is not uniform, so it can be proved that multi-segment curve sliding surface method could get closer to actual situation of the most dangerous sliding surface.
