Mechanical Properties for the Anisotropy of Slate under the Influence of Different Bedding Orientations

The importance of considering rock anisotropy in different aspects of civil and rock engineering is well known and has been thoroughly demonstrated. As a result, mechanical characteristics of slate are revealed by Uniaxial and Brazilian disc splitting tests. Based on the Uniaxial tests under seven different kinds of bedding angles q, it found that two kinds of compressive failure forms of slat can be obtained as follows:internal compression shear failure and shear surface rough when the bedding angle 0° to 30° and 75° to 90°; along the bedding plane sliding failure and failure surface very smooth when the bedding angle between 30° and 75°. And the Brazilian splitting test had three kinds of failure forms of disc can be obtained as follows: pure tensile failure when the bedding angle is <45°, shearing failure when the bedding angle q>75°,and both tensile and shearing failure when the bedding angle is between 45° and 75°. Meanwhile, because of the impact of internal bedding structure on the slate,compressive strength first decrease and then increase with the depth and tensile strength gradually decreases with the bedding angle varying from 0° to 90°.
