 ABSTRACT

Practical experiment and simulation are combined to study the mechanical properties and fracture law of the rock specimens which contain 3 prefabricated structural planes under direct shear pressure. 4 stages are involved in the failure process, they can be described as: the stage before rock bridge fracutre, fracture developing stage, the sliding stage alongside the interface and the stage after the failure of structural planes. Combined with numerical simulation, it is found that failure appeared at the tips of structural planes firstly, the rock bridge is cut-through by inner fractures, and the outside fracture may develop to the surface of rock specimen. Slidng failure along the structural planes may exist when failure evolved to a certain degree.
