Failure Characteristics and Influencing Factors Analysis of Embankment Engineering damage due to Wenchuan Earthquake

Based on the investigation of the embankment earthquake disasters from Wenchuan earthquake with the Ms8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake on May 12th 2008, the earthquake damage types and causes of embankment engineering, retaining walls in embankment shoulder and embankment cutting were analyzed under the Dujiangyan-Yingxiu third-grade highway built in 2005. The following primary results are as follows: (1) The deformation and collapse of embankment slope are main damage types for the high embankment with stepped slope, but the main body of high embankment with stepped slope can keep stable even in strong earthquake area; (2) Lateral tilt is the most general damage type of retaining walls for road shoulder, and it indicates that the effect of seismic wave on embankment is still the horizontal force in the near field region and the increase of the stability against overturning should be the key of the earthquake resistant design for retaining wall; (3) The distresses of shear break and outward shoving in the middle of concrete stopping wall are generally observed, and the damage degree of mortar flagstone wall is controlled by the distance from the epicenter. Therefore, mortar flagstone wall is unsuitable for strong earthquake area.
