The geotechnical engineering Web sites listed in the World Wide Web Virtual Library of Geotechnical Engineering, GVL, are evaluated annually in our unofficial contests.
In 1999, the Web sites of geotechnical consulting companies in GVL were selected for evaluation. The evaluation was performed by a Special Team of Young Civil/Geotechnical Engineers.
Evaluation Criteria
The sites were evaluated in the following criteria
- Informativeness
Whether the website contains informative, contains useful information about the company and relevant topics - Aesthetics
Whether the website has a pleasant appearance - User-friendliness
Whether the website is easy to navigate to locate the information the typically looked for by the users - Job opportunities
Whether the website gives information about available job opportunities and other relevant information on employment - Links
Whether the website provides useful links for a visitor
Categories
The criteria considered in evaluation of the sites has lead to categories; websites have been often found to excell with respect to one or more criteria, therefore winners were selected in each criterion group. The website that excelled in all categories was named as "the overall best" site. Here is the Category Winners

Evaluation Process
The sites were evaluated in stages as in any contest; in the first stage the sites to be considered were selected and listed. Then each judge visited all the websites independently. Third, the sites that did not meet the minimum criteria were eliminated. The judges then visited each site again and assigned a mark, 1 through 5, to each site, for each criterion. Then they added up the points each judge assigned to each site. This determined the top ten sites, or the finalists. The judges are currently (March 1999) re-evaluating each site for the final roundup.
