Groundwater Quality in and near Highways Constructed with Treated Wastes and By-p roducts.

Road construction provides the opportunity of disposing of large quantities of sl ag, ash, waste slate, china clay sand residue, etc., thus contributing to the quality of the environment by reducing waste tipping and quarrying of primary aggregate. However, many of these materials contain potential contaminants of groundwater adjacent to the highway. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has made a grant to Andrew Dawson to undertake a study of the degree of risk and possible treatment methods to mitigate problems.

He is therefore looking for a Research Assistant to work on this project for a fixed three-year term. The major part of the work is expected to be laboratory-based with material preparation and leachate collection forming a large element. The ability to prepare reports for the sponsors and for the collaborants (British Geological Survey, Environment Agency, PowerGen, National Power) is also an important aspect.

If you are interested in carrying out research in this area, and preferably have a few years post-graduation experience in a related one, please send your full CV and a covering letter of application (indicating your earliest start date) to arrive by July 5th to the address given below. Further details of the project and employment terms will be sent to all applicants.

It is expected that the successful applicant will be able to register for a PhD degree. Andrew Dawson
