Engineer - Marine Geotechnical
Department: Exploration Production Technology Division: Project Engineering & Management Deepwater Technology Location: Houston, Texas
Client has set ambitious growth target of doubling in value over the next seven years and is aggressively taking actions to achieve that goal. The company is undertaking major upstream projects in the UK, the Gulf of Mexico, Venezuela, and Indonesia. In addition, the company has an active exploration program focused on its deepwater portfolio in the Gulf of Mexico, North Sea, Nigeria, Trinidad, and New Zealand. The deepwater program is a primary strategic initiative of the company.
The Deepwater Technology group in the company is a multi-disciplined team that is responsible for providing engineering support and deepwater solutions the deepwater opportunities. Its roles are: to provide support to growing deepwater Business Units and new Business development efforts around the world, plan and implement a deepwater technology development program, support the marine aspects of shallow water projects, and ensure global functional excellence in the Offshore Engineering and Subsea/Export skill sets. Client is seeking an experienced Marine Geotechnical Engineering candidate to support shallow and deepwater activities and lead deepwater technology development.
As a technical contributor within the Deepwater Technology group, the individual will be responsible for leading Marine Geotechnical Engineering activities in technology development and technical support to offshore exploration and production projects, from feasibility studies to project execution. The responsibilities include leading geo-hazard & geotechnical technology development projects, under the guidance of the Leader, Offshore Engineering. Additional responsibilities will include front end loading marine geotechnical engineering activities, or being responsible for the design, fabrication and installation of a major seafloor component of a large international project, under the guidance of the Project Manager.
Define (scope & budget) and lead marine geotechnical TD studies that enhance the company's knowledge base and capabilities, and support the overall business and technical drivers consistent with company best practices and metrics for project performance. Provide consultative services (budgeting, specification, and QA/QC of contracted services) for geo-hazard assessments, site investigations, and engineering criteria development, in support of the company's worldwide exploration and production operations. Define (scope & budget) and lead marine geotechnical studies during front end loading that support the overall business and technical drivers consistent with company best practices and metrics for project performance. Support development of economic evaluations of design alternatives for production facilities. Assist with preparation of project front end deliverables including the Plan of Development, the Project Execution plan, and the Project Control Budget and Schedule. In all work, establish, maintain, and meet the safety and environmental goals consistent with the company's core values in safety and environmental stewardship. Provide input to contracting and procurement strategies. Provide geotechnical engineering discipline input in preparation of technical bid packages and evaluation of contractor responses. When assigned to a Project, provide overall direction and leadership for all geotechnical engineering activities from site investigation to hazard assessment to design to fabrication and installation. Supervise, direct and coordinate the effort of company and contractor discipline engineers. Provide input to regulatory and certification requirements to ensure timely receipt of approvals. Act as a liaison with other asset development team members such as geology, geophysics, reservoir, drilling, production, facilities, structural, commercial, operations planning and other Exploration Production Technology Department technical experts, to assure compatibility of interfaces, and optimize overall project quality, cost, and schedule. Ensure their input is incorporated into the design and support their efforts during front end loading and project execution. Monitor industry developments in upstream technology, project design and implementation and introduce these to Conoco efforts as appropriate. Stay abreast of company and industry best practices, standards, and regulations. As a member of Project Engineering and Management Division, build strong intra-company relationships with Business Development and operating Business Units, which would seek out the group for its technical expertise and project development capability.
MS or ME in Geotechnical, Civil, or Ocean Engineering, Engineering Geology, or Geological Oceanography. Advanced or dual degree with specialty in areas such as Structural Dynamics, Physical Oceanography, Geology, Geophysics, or Finite Element Analysis is a plus. Minimum 5 years of related industry experience, with evidence of both supervision and direct field study, analysis, and design of seafloor structures, is a plus. International project experience and re-location mobility preferred. Intimate knowledge of soil mechanics concepts, slope stability, and foundation engineering theory. Familiarity with concepts of physical and chemical oceanography, geology, and geophysics, or remote sensing. Must have a working knowledge of related ISO and ASTM standards, and API and AISC design & construction guidance. Demonstrated ability to run Offshore Structural/Geotechnical Design and Analysis computer programs such as SACS, StruCAD, DAMS, APILE, SPLICE, INTRA, SPASM, BMCOL, SESAM, CAPWAP, TIDYWAVE, MICROWAVE, PLAXIS, or other tools for analytical study of seafloor stability, shallow foundation performance, or deep foundation performance. Must be familiar with offshore fabrication and installation practices. Must have prior project experience working on a multi discipline project. Experience and ability to independently produce project documents: Basis of Design, Design Criteria, Specifications, Bid Packages, Bid Tabs, and Contracts. Ability to produce cost estimates and schedules for Site Investigation, Design, Fabrication and Installation phases. Experience and ability to plan and control Discipline work through the generation of schedules, manpower estimates and manpower staffing plans for both engineering and drafting staff. Demonstrated ability to supervise engineers and drafting staff. Must be able to perform calculations as necessary to either check Contractor's work or evaluate concepts during early FEL phases.
