Geotechnical Associate Civil Engineer/Associate Engineer, Civil Structural Engineering Unit

The Santa Clara Valley Water District is responsible for the water supply, flood protection and watershed management in Santa Clara County. The District encompasses all of the county’s 1,300 square miles and serves the area’s 15 cities, 1.7 million residents and more than 200,000 commuters. Our responsibilities flow from our dual missions: to provide a high quality water, and to manage flood and storm waters along the county’s 700 miles of creeks and rivers.

Duties: Under the direction and guidance of senior level geotechnical engineering staff, to lead, supervise, oversee and/or participate in the work of professional geotechnical engineering staff responsible for planning and supervising subsurface soil investigations; laboratory soil testing; geotechnical engineering analysis including static and seismic slope stability, seepage, liquefaction, bearing capacity, pile load capacity, and settlement analysis; reviewing and/or preparing geotechnical reports for design of levees, creek bank stabilization, retaining walls; flood walls, shallow and deep foundations, levee upgrade/maintenance, and erosion control measures; treatment of expansive soils and pavement design criteria, reviewing and/or preparing geotechnical design, construction plans and specifications; and inspecting and supervising quality-control testing during geotechnical/earthwork construction of District’s flood control, water quality, and water utility projects, to ensure work quality and adherence to professional codes, standards, and District specifications; and to perform a variety of professional services relative to the assigned area of responsibility.

Minimum qualifications: Two years of professional civil engineering experience in geotechnical engineering at a level equivalent to that of the Assistant Engineer II (Civil) classification (i.e.: Assistant Engineer II: Two years of professional engineering experience at a level equivalent to that of the Assistant Engineer I classification) and, equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a related field OR possession of a Valid California Engineer-in-Training certificate with two years of associated paraprofessional engineering experience. A Masters degree in geotechnical engineering is desirable. Special Requirements Registered positions within this classification must possess registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license may be required with determinations made on a case by case basis at the time of job posting. Any offer of employment is contingent on the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.

Salary: $5,909 - $ 7,200 per month - Associate Civil Engineer - registered
$5,765 - $7,024 per month - Associate Engineer, Civil - non-registered

Based on a five-step salary plan. Includes District payment of 7% PERS - Public Employees' Retirement System.
